The Five Greatest Blues Guitarists

It’s the Chicago Blues Fest this weekend in Grant Park, our annual celebration of one of America’s finest music forms. The modern electric blues combo was invented and perfected here in the world’s most beautiful modern city; amplifying an already potent sound almost literally to infinity. Blues guitar began acoustically with Charley Patton, Robert Johnson, Rev. Gary Davis and others, but these guys are plugged in:

Lightning fast, leaves out all the right notes and plays with a feeling. Maybe the best, period.

The King of Twing and probably the most famous bluesman of all time. His radio DJ work was excellent training.

The voice of the blues apocalypse punctuated by the stinging, economical lines of Mr. Sumlin.

The man who inspired Clapton and Stevie Ray. Blazing speed, perfect tone.

One of the originators of the West Side blues. Master of the slow burn and a fine singer as well.
